Triptychs

about Triptychs

A triptych is an art work made up of three pieces or panels to show either a sequence or different elements of the same subject matter.

Triptych art work gained popularity in Christian art in the middle ages and was often used for private devotional practices.

I use the triptych format to increase the size of my paintings, especially where a landscape needs a bigger format.

It is also easier for me to work on smaller canvases at the easel instead of on one large canvas. It is helpful when transporting the picture, as the canvases can be separated for travelling and then joined on arrival. I usually join them with a baton which keeps the canvases in place and gives one hanging wire.
